Types of modelling

Below is a list of the various types of modelling together with a brief explanation of what may be required.

Your suitability for the type of work is determined by your willingness and physical characteristics.

Before going further, it will be necessary for you to decide which type of work you feel you are suited to or are prepared to try.

Portrait

A portrait is defined as a likeness of a person, especially of the person’s face. A photographic portrait is understood to be a good quality image that not only captures a person’s physical likeness on film, but also something of the person’s character, generally in a manner that is attractive and pleasing to the subject

Body Parts

There is a market for modelling your body parts, particularly hands, legs, and feet.

Commercial

Modelling for the purposes of advertising, such as in catalogues, magazine advertisements (print ads), and on television.

Editorial

Modelling to illustrate and or accompany an editorial article or story (not an advertisement) appearing in a publication.

Lingerie

The basic requirements for lingerie models are similar to those of catalogue models, with the exception that fuller-breasted women may have an edge. Again, petite and plus size models have opportunities in this area.

Fashion and Lifestyle

Modelling designer clothes at either fashion shows or in advertisements. This includes runway modelling. There are usually strict height requirements: 5'8" - 5'11" for women and 5'11" - 6'2" for men.

Fine Art

Artistic, interpretative, and often explorative images of the human form.

Fitness

Modelling your toned and well-conditioned body, usually wearing athletic clothing or using exercise equipment.

Glamour

Generally refers to Playboy style nude modelling, which "glamorize" the human form in a sensual manner, but can also refer to swimsuit or lingerie modelling.

Petite

Commercial modelling for women who fall below the minimum height requirements of many agencies.

Pluss size

Commercial modelling for women who are 5'8" or taller and wear a dress size 12 - 14.

Swimsuit

Modelling bathing suits for calendars, magazine advertisements
